There are several ways to help a senior dog with shoulder issues:

  1. Consult a veterinarian: It's important to consult a veterinarian to properly diagnose the issue and determine the best course of treatment. They may suggest medication or other treatments to alleviate pain and inflammation, as well as physical therapy or rehabilitation exercises.

  2. Provide a comfortable and supportive bedding: Orthopedic beds with extra padding can help provide support and cushioning for the shoulder joints.

  3. Help them move around: Help your dog move around and get in and out of bed, or in and out of the car. You can use a harness or a sling to help support their weight, but be sure to follow your vet's advice and instructions.

  4. Exercise: Low-impact exercises such as swimming, short walks, or physical therapy exercises, prescribed by the vet, can help to keep your dog mobile and maintain muscle mass.

  5. Weight management: Maintaining a healthy weight can also help to reduce stress on the shoulder joints. This may sound like a no-brainer but it's so important. Dogs ALWAYS want that snack or bit of food. You are keeping them healthy by denying them! They should have a defined waist and look a little skinny but definitely verify this would your vet as it may vary according to their breed and age.

  6. Supplements: Some supplements such as glucosamine and chondroitin can help to reduce inflammation and improve joint health. However, it's important to consult with your veterinarian before giving your dog any supplements as they may interact with any medication your dog is currently taking. We use Wuffes joint chews for our 10-year-old girl and she's doing AMAZING! Click here to check it out!

  7. Avoid strenuous activities: Avoid activities that put extra stress on the shoulder such as jumping, running, or climbing stairs.

It's important to remember that recovery times vary, and it's crucial to follow your veterinarian's instructions and recommendations when it comes to helping your senior dog with shoulder issues. With proper care and management, you can help your furry friend to live a happy and comfortable life.
